I'm not someone who you'd call a connoisseur of vegetarian food. In fact I have a better chance of scaling Mt. Everest effortlessly than ordering without stuffing up when faced with an all-vegetarian menu. And could someone please explain how can any restaurant charge 200 bucks for 7 florets of cauliflower?
But personal biases aside, Shiv Sagar is my go-to restaurant for south-indian dishes like dosas and idlis. I visited their outlet at Viman Nagar for the first time and was very pleasantly surprised by the decor. It was quite plush and tastefully done-up, very unlike the regular Udipi restaurant feel that most of their other outlets exude.
I'd visited a Shiv Sagar restaurant after a long time and spotted some Mexican dishes apart from the south-indian, north-indian and chinese dishes that one is used to. Now i also have this 'keeda' inside me which makes me order strange sounding dishes on restaurant menus and this keeda got activated when someone ordered nachos with cheese sauce. So my dish of the evening was beans and cheese enchiladas. Yes sir! We also ordered the bhaaji dosa which is a dosa stuffed with pav-bhaaji's bhaaji.
The bhaaji stuffed dosa was a refreshing change from the regular masala dosas; crisp buttery dosa stuffed with a medium spicy bhaaji was indeed a revelation for me. The corn chips and the cheese sauce in the nachos weren't half-bad but they seem to have used processed cheese instead of the authentic monterey jack. But hey, this is Shiv Sagar and you don't come here for authentic Mexican. The same can be said for the enchiladas as well. The beans component was more like 'rajma masala gone horribly wrong' and the roti {as described by our attendant} was a bit difficult to cut into but was soft to chew. I'm sure there are worse enchiladas being served by authentic Mexican restaurants but would i pay 180 bucks a pop for this dish again? Probably not.
The also seem to have introduced Matka desserts and we ordered the Matka Rabri and Matka Lassi. The Rabri had the texture of a mash made with rotten potatoes and going by the expression of fellow-diners it probably was. Skipped this one. The matka lassi, more like a shrikhand actually, was superb - luscious and mercifully not overtly sweet. This is a must-try for sure.
The prices of the south indian dishes seemed in accordance with their other outlets but the prices of the north-indian and chinese dishes seemed to be a bit steeper. But then again, i've visited a Shiv Sagar restaurant after ages so i could be wrong. If you're looking for a good vegetarian restaurant with a classy ambiance in viman nagar, this is one of the better options.
