Cafe Diamond Queen

Continuing my trip of discovering restaurants that are extremely popular but have somehow been missed out, I landed at the highly recommended Cafe Diamond Queen. I'd been warned that this is not really a place for a family dinner - though they do have a family room which i didn't bother checking out - so i decided to get a takeaway. They've got the regular tandoor and mughlai dishes but mutton crump chop masala and beef kheema masala were particularly recommended so that's what i was after.

Just to be sure, the crump chop masala is not pieces of mutton chops tossed in gravy. Instead, it's huge mutton cutlet cut in to bite sized pieces, tossed in a spiced red gravy and enough oil to get the US to invade the restaurant. The dish was obviously heavy, but surprisingly not spicy despite it's fiery red colour. Have it with some bread or roomali roti and it's a satisfying meal for 2-3 people because the quantity is more than generous.

The kheema masala was packed for breakfast for the next day and just like the crump chop masala, it was well spiced, mildly spicy and the quantity was deceptively generous. A couple of bites in to this dish and you figure out exactly why everyone and their uncle keeps raving about it. I suggest you mop it up with their gorgeous bun-maska and a couple of fried eggs on the side and your sunday brunch is sorted.

While waiting for my order to be prepared, i tried the naan-khataai and mawa cake {both strictly average} along with their awesome irani chai and also packed some khaari biscuits which turned out to be fresh, crispy and fabulous. And their bun maska rivals the best in the city.

I've only been to Goodluck and Diamond once each and while i prefer the former for it's food and the fact it's more suited for family outings, Diamond is a very decent option for a budget takeaway if you're around the corner. Have a dekho.
