Hyatt Pune organized a special preview for the Pune Foodiez that resulted in a blissful Sunday afternoon.
The soothing sounds of a waterfall, of meat and fresh vegetables bubbling away in a delicious broth emitting the most heavenly aromas and silence on the dining table only to be broken by joyful slurping - Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the Shabu Shabu festival at Baan Tao, Hyatt Pune.
Shabu Shabu, in concept, would remind many of the Chimney Soup {or Hot Pot} that was the rage a while back in a lot of Chinese restaurants. In simple terms, it's a flavoured broth {you get to choose between mild and spicy / veg. and chicken} which is accompanied by a platter of vegetables, meat or seafood which are to be cooked in the boiling broth at the table. The ingredients on the platter served here are stunning - authentic oriental greens, silken tofu, exotic varieties of mushroom, tenderloin slices, prawns, salmon and squid. To add more flavour to your meal, you also get a some really interesting sauces like pepper-spring onion, lemon-corriander and sesame seeds with chilli on the side which you could either add to the soup or simply dunk the vegetables and meats in. My favourite combination was tenderloin slices with the honey infused sesame seeds and chilli sauce.
The best part, of course, is that the flavour of the soup changes depending on when you add which ingredients and the cooking time. So, the more we cooked the soup with all those meats and vegetables in it, the more complex and flavoursome it got.
Obviously, you need to be careful while cooking these ingredients because you run the risk of either eating them raw or over-cooking them, thus spoiling the experience and so if you're a culinary novice, I suggest you seek help from the kitchen.
The platters are competitively priced at Rs.700/-, Rs.800/- and Rs.900/- {plus taxes} for the vegetarian, meat and seafood options respectively. The festival is on from the 15th Jan. - 31st Jan. for lunch and dinner and simply not to be missed.
