My new year started on a brilliant note with the discovery of another gem which had completely escaped me so far. Reddy's is a massively popular dhaba at Viman Nagar, frequented by students , IT / BPO professionals and families alike. Obviously, I reside on another planet.
When I was recommended Reddy's by fellow foodies, I assumed it to be one of those hole-in-the-wall South Indian joints one is used to seeing in Destination Center, Magarpatta. I couldn't have been more wrong and the sheer size of the place left me gob-smacked. You're greeted by at least 100 tandoori chickens carefully hung around their tandoor area. No prizes for guessing what their most popular dish is.
Looking at the menu you do get the feeling that the prices are on the higher side. Rs.290/- for a full tandoori is a good 10% pricier than similar restaurants. The trend was similar for the curries and rice dishes as well. Anyways, we ordered a full tandoori chicken, 1/2 butter chicken with butter naans and mutton biryani.
The tandoori chicken arrived taking every inch of the huge dinner plate it was served on. The portion is rather large and consists of everything from the neck to the wings {my favourite}. Succulent, juicy and extremely flavourful, this dish was an absolutely delightful start to the meal. Even though I prefer food that's mildly spiced with minimum chillies, having dessert for main course is not my idea of fun and so I detest the butter chicken most places whip up. Mercifully, the butter chicken here is superbly spiced, mildly hot even, and was awesome eating it piping hot with butter naans on a winter evening. I {wrongly?} tend to judge places according to the quality of bread {in this case naans} they serve; I mean, if you can't get your basics right, what are you doing here in the first place? The naans here are brilliant. Thankfully!
The mutton biryani was as well-spiced and flavoured as any tawa biryani can get. The accompanying rassa only added more flavour to the biryani and we ended our meal on a very happy note. One reason why most restaurants don't sell dum biryani is that it needs to be consumed that very day and can't really be carried forward to the next day. With it's popularity, Reddy's should face no problem on that front at least so I wish they did have the dum version as well.
We paid approx. Rs.900/- between the three of us and trust me, even if wouldn't have ordered the biryani we'd have still walked out with reasonably full tummies. Yes, the portions are huge and the prices don't pinch you after-all.
I also saw a lot of folks ordering from their Indian-Chinese menu and being a huge fan of this cuisine that's on my list for sure. I loved the rustic, no pretense dhaba-style ambiance and food preparation.
