The Travelling Sushi Festival @ Shizusan.

Mediterranean Roll

My opinion on vegetarian sushi is roughly the same as it is on Donald Trump - they're both stupid-ass and will ultimately kill you, only that the orange-faced buffoon will nuke the shit out of you and break into fits of psychopathic laughter while he's at it. But if you're so inclined, you could take the Chiang Mai Uramaki {avocado, crunchy asparagus, bird's eye chillies} and Tutto Funghi Uramaki {wild mushrooms, shimeji tempura, kewpie mayo} out for a spin. They've both got crispy textural elements - the Chiang Mai also has considerable amount of heat from those chillies - and are well executed and won't leave you feeling like you're munching on a pimped-up garden salad with rice.

Now that we've got the proverbial elephant out of the room, let's talk.

Sri Lankan Roll

The Travelling Sushi Festival menu at Shizusan is a collage of sushis inspired by different cuisines like Greek, Jamaican, Mediterranean and Italian. Admittedly, reading about ingredients like cranberries, hummus and coconut cream added to sushi was, to put it mildly, petrifying, but Chef Paul Kinny pulls it off by balancing the flavours deftly. So the mild sweetness from beetroot rice and coconut cream in the Sri Lankan Roll is juxtaposed with spicy crab meat and sambal with some crispy yam chips thrown in for good measure, resulting in a roll that's addictive af.

Jamaican Roll

The Jamaican Roll and Norwegian Salmon Maki were on similar lines with sweet-spicy-crunchy elements in each of them. While the former had crayfish tempura, spicy jerk mayo, activated charcoal and agave rice, the creaminess of Philadelphia cheese in the smoked salmon maki was cut through by sauerkraut and mustard artichokes. Both quite delish. The Peking Duck Maki had nicely smoked meat but the milder flavours of the roll paled in comparison to the seafood options.

Peanut Butter Pie

My favourite dessert at Shizusan is the creamy Peanut Butter Pie which comes on a crunchy chocolate-peanut crust. We tried the Chocolate Mud Pie as well but I definitely preferred the peanut butter-based confection. Of the mocktails - still no alcohol in Phoenix, remember? -, the Thai Thai {orange juice +  kafir lime leaves} was super refreshing but I can swear I heard my drink literally begging for a generous shot of Grey Goose.

Thai Thai

The Travelling Sushi Festival is on till 31st July {available all day}. The vegetarian and non vegetarian rolls are priced at Rs.565++ and Rs.665++ respectively.
